The usage of heena spans many decades and cultures. From making tiny roses on shoulders to full body motifs, as hair coloring and conditioning agents, various types of henna have made their way into the mainstream as a modern consumer product. Heena is made from the ground up dried leaves and stems of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). But these can take up different forms resulting into the manufacture of wide array of henna products including black henna, neutral hena, henna mehndi, red heena, natural henna, herbal hena and many more.

Black Henna
Black HennaHenna in its pure form is greenish in color and when applied to the skin it leaves a stain; sometimes light brown sometimes reddish brown. In an effort to make realistic looking, modern day, temporary tattoo, the manufactures of heena powder and paste add black colors, thus creating black henna. Black henna is henna with a black dye added and is widely used for tattoo and hair coloring.

Black heena is advertised as a fun, temporary decoration that, because of its dark stain, looks like a real tattoo. It is supposed to last for one to three weeks and are widely used by people who are a regular visitors to swanky fairs, festivals, beaches, concerts and clubs. Apart from tattoo, black henna that are free from chemical ingredients, gives natural shining to the hairs. The paste is squeezed out of an applicator onto the skin and the design is left to stain and flakes off when dry. Red heena takes a few hours to stain the skin and once removed, it leaves a light orange stain on the skin that slowly darkens to a deeper copper brown over few hours.

It is very good for hair treatment as it prevents hair fall and make it naturally strong. As the name itself defines that it gives only conditioning not coloring, neutral henna does not impart any coloring. It gives only the nourishment and conditioning.

The conditioning properties of henna are so desirable that treatments with "neutral" henna are very popular. Neutral heena deposits a minute but a highly reflective, cellophane-like coating on each hair shaft. This results in a brilliant shine that reflects the many colors already in the hair. This color effect will become more pronounced with continued usage of neutral heena.

Henna is made from the ground up dried leaves and stems of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). Henna mehndi art is a lot of fun and doesn't require a lot of artistic skill. Although henna mehndi has been marketed as a quick and easy way of "tattooing", it is more accurately a form of staining or painting, since the dye is temporary and usually lasts few days.

Intrigued by the creation of beautiful designs on the body, henna mehndi is being used by women worldwide as a mode of self-expression. The designs originate from the practices followed on these occasions and represent specific objects, dresses, floral designs, leaves, flowers and birds associated with the festival.

The hair dye made of henna mehndi is usually green to look at in powder form because the dried leaves are green. This surprises some first time users, but the red color only appears once the dye powder is dissolved in solution and applied to the hair. It seals in oils and tightens the hair cuticle giving the hair a rich, healthy shine.

Herbal Henna

The process is done by penetration and by staining. Henna molecules have a chemical affinity with keratin (hair) molecules and thus the pigment can pass freely into the hair. The penetration of herbal henna imparts both color and condition into the hair and it closes and strengthens the outer cuticle of the hair, thus giving a superb shine and conditioning effect.
