It’s now official: overusing cell phones could possibly trigger brain cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has, after years of dawdling, ruled that there is indeed an unhealthy link between tumors and mobile phone’s electromagnetic radiation.

On Tuesday, WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as Group 2B agents that could “possibly be carcinogenic to humans’’.

The cell phone-cancer link has been strongly debated for over a decade, but scientists had so far maintained that there is no indelible proof to nail electromagnetic radiation as the culprit. But the mood seems to have changed because of the phenomenal increase in the number of mobile phone subscriptions—5 billion globally and over
600 million users in India alone. The summation seems to be that it’s better to use prevention rather than hunt for cure(s) for mobile-related maladies.

The WHO/IARC classification is the result of a week-long deliberation between 31 scientists from 14 countries in Lyon, France.

Cell scare: Don’t panic, limit use

Mumbai: A statement released on Tuesday by the working group categorically said that there is an increased risk of glioma—a malignant form of brain cancer—associated with wireless phone use. The WHO has warned that excessive cell phone usage could trigger brain cancer. International news agencies quoted Kurt Straif, the scientist in charge of editing the IARC reports that will be published in Lancet Oncology’s July 1 edition, as saying, “There is some evidence of increased risk of glioma and another form of non-malignant tumour called acoustic neuroma.’’

What has emerged as an area of major concern is the extensive use of mobile phones among the youth. “The number of users is large and growing, particularly among young adults and children,’’ the working group said. The unwritten rule seems to be the WHO finding last year that problems could begin for those who have been speaking on a mobile phone for over 30 minutes every day for over 10 years.

Doctors have, however, asked people to not panic but be cautious. “Mobile phones are useful tools, but one should limit the use. Basically, you should cut down on talk time or use SMS,’’ said Dr Shashank Joshi, honorary editor of JAPI (Journal of Association of Physicians of India).

Cancer surgeon Dr P Jagannath said, “We have to ask people to either limit their calls or use more of handsfree. Manufacturers should be instructed to produce mobile with safe radiation levels.’’ He said the government should, in line with PUC certificate for vehicles, come up with EMR standards for cell phones and base towers.

Officially, India reacted with caution. Union health secretary Dr V M Katoch said, “There appears to be a lot of attention generated by WHO’s classification for electromagnetic radiation. But we will first go into the scientific merit of what has been said, analyze it and then react.’’

The Indian medical fraternity feels vindicated with the WHO/IARC classification. Said Dr Joshi, “We, in India, talked about the cancer-cell phone link three years back in our study.’’ The review study, published in JAPI, said that there is no denying that excessive use of phone could lead to health hazards in general and cancer in particular. “It’s not just cancer, cell phones can affect people’s hormonal levels, lead to acoustic neuromas in the ears and even anxiety about ring tones,’’ said Joshi.

In February, an inter-ministerial committee formed by Union Ministry of communications and IT concluded that radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep disturbances.

The IARC monograph is based on WHO’s Interphone study, which was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology last year. The report had suggested that using a mobile phone for more than 30 minutes each day could increase the risk of glioma.

The IARC Monograph Working Group also discussed electromagnetic fields arising from occupational exposures to radar and to microwaves; environmental exposures associated with transmission of signals for radio, TV and wireless telecommunication and personal exposures associated with the use of wireless telephones.

Take a break from your handset

IARC Monographs identify environmental factors, such as chemicals, complex mixtures, occupational exposures, physical and biological agents and lifestyle factors, that can increase the risk of human cancer. Since 1971, over 900 agents have been evaluated, of which approximately 400 have been identified as carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic to humans.

What Indian doctors/ scientists have said so far

  • An inter-ministerial committee formed by Union ministry of communications and IT in February 2011 concluded that radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep disturbances.
  • It also attributed the disappearance of butterflies, bees, insects and sparrows vanishing from big cities to mobile phone-related radiation.
  • Three years ago, Journal of Association of Physicians of India (JAPI) editor Shashank Joshi carried a comprehensive review on the harmful effects
The review said:
  1. Thermal effect: Exposure to very high radio frequency power densities (100 mW/cm2 or more) can heat biological tissue and increase body temperature.
  2. Neurological: Predominant one-sided usage, high daily usage and exposure for a large duration of time (usually more than 10 years) have been found in some studies to raise the risk of brain tumours.
  3. Psychiatric: Experts report increasing incidence of ringtone anxiety in which users imagine their phone to be ringing or feel it vibrating.
  4. Cardiovascular: Mobiles can cause electromagnetic interference in the working of implanted pacemakers.
  5. Endocrine: A French group studied the influence of electromagnetic fields emitted by GSM-900 cellular telephones on steroid and pituitary hormone levels in healthy males and discovered that levels dropped.
  6. Reproductive: Rats subjected to mobile radiation were found to have damaged DNA and low sperm count.
  7. Miscellaneous: A study said that prolonged use of a cellphone leads to inactivity and is associated with an increased risk of obesity
What to do with cellphones now
  • Limit the use to essential calls and keep them short, particularly in rural areas. Or, simply, text t Allow children to use a cellphone only in cases of emergency. Since their skulls are developing, radiation can penetrate deeper than in adults.
  • Do not make a call when the signal strength is at one bar or less. It essentially means the phone must work harder to establish a connection.
  • Buy a phone with a low specific absorption rate (SAR), which is a way to measure the quantity of RF energy that is absorbed by the body.

So now it's official - the World Health Organisation (WHO) says cellphones may be carcinogenic. Yes, they could trigger brain cancer. But you're not going to scream in horror and throw them away, are you? Cellphones are just too important. So what can you do to stay connected without Bheja Microwave?

1. Get a handsfree. Duh, but it's not that simple. Bluetooth headsets add bluetooth radiation to cellphone radiation - not as much, but still enough... and if you're carrying the phone in your pocket at the same time, it's just increasing your dosage. Go for a wired piece as far as possible.

If you really like the BT sets, here's something you need to know while choosing one. They come in three classes:
1 - These are the most harmful
2 - 40 times less harmful than 1
3 - The best type but also the most expensive.

Make sure you read the label when you go shopping.

Tips to make your cellphone battery last longer!

2. Read the label when buying a new cellphone - there's something called SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) which is basically a count of how much radiation it gives off. The lower, the better.

3. If you're on one bar, the cellphone is working overtime to catch the signal - which means it's giving off that much more radiation. The same applies for fading signals, call drops, etc. When this is happening, it's not a good idea to go for long calls; move to a better reception area.

4. When dialling a number, radiation increases. Wait till the call connects before holding your cellphone to your ear.

5. In the office, get into the habit of keeping your cellphone on a table or bag instead of your pocket.

6. Use speaker phone function whenever possible, especially for those long conference calls or while waiting for customer service.

7. Don't use your cellphone in enclosed metal spaces - lifts, cars, buses, etc. The metal acts as what they call a Faraday cage, trapping radiation and channeling it around the same area, and back to you. Plus, the reception is much weaker.

For all you naughty girls, learn how to romance him with your cellphone here.

8. If you use your cellphone as an alarm clock, try keeping it a little away from the bed, instead of next to the pillow. This immediately cuts exposure by half, at a time when your body has a chance to heal. Plus, getting out of bed to switch off the alarm takes care of the snooze-till-you're-late problem as well.

9. Have more anti-oxidants. Cellphone radiation damages the immune system and reduces the body's ability to heal - which means, yes, it will make you look older and catch more diseases even if you don't get brain tumours. Encourage your body to heal.

10. Don't give cellphones to kids. You already know this - but their skulls are softer, so radiation reaches the brain more easily. If you must give it, encourage use only in emergencies. Use a post-paid plan so you can track usage. And of course, educate them about the dangers of using cellphones.

Drumstick Leaves

The leaves of the drumstick plant have great nutritional value. It contains 38 percent protein with all amino acids, making it a richer source of proteins compared to other vegetables. The drumstick tree in fact has the highest protein ratio of any plant on earth, with calcium content of the leaves being 297mg per 100g of leaves, making it a valuable source of protein for vegetarians.100 grams of freshly cooked drumstick leaves provide for 75 percent of iron and 50 percent of proteins required by a growing child. Evidence from sub-Saharan African countries indicates that incorporation of two tablespoons of crushed drumstick leaves in the daily diet help overcome malnutrition.The nutritional benefits of dried and crushed drumstick leaves apart, the powder also finds use as a flavoring agent, with the flavor similar to peas with a mild mustard taste. Sliced and young green pods also find use as a savory in meat dishes.

Drumstick Seeds

Drumstick seeds find traditional use as a folk remedy for the cure of various ailments such as diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, dysentery, diarrhea, colitis, jaundice, urinary infection, impotence, hemorrhoids, cramps, headaches, sore gums, and many other infections. Drumstick seed uses extend to clear throat inflections and aiding the respiratory system. Inhaling a steam of water mixed with crushed drumstick seeds help alleviate asthma and other lung problems. Oil from the drumstick seed, called Oil of Ben is an effective cure for earache and many skin diseases.Research over the years indicate that drumstick seeds strengthen the eyes, sharpens the brain, strengthens the digestive system, boosts the immune system, and cleanses the blood.Research conducted by the University of Leicester, U.K. indicates that drumstick seeds can be put to good use as a low cost solution to making available clean and potable water. A powder of dried and crushed drumstick seeds when added to water binds itself to dirt particles and bacteria and sinks to the bottom. Two teaspoons of crushed seeds would effectively clear 99 percent of all the bacteria and muck in a bucket of water.

Drumstick Oil

Drumstick seed oil is equivalent to olive oil in health benefits. The oil is rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid. Research indicates that oleic acid lowers cholesterol levels and prevents cancer.Drumstick oil has an added advantage over most vegetable oils in that it is odorless, stable and does not turn rancid. These properties explain its widespread use in the manufacture of soaps, perfumes and even as lubricants in watch making. GOOD MANNERS ARE AT THE HEART OF GOOD HEALTH

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Friday, June 10, 2011 0 comments

London: People with good manners , whether at office or home, are more than twice likely to have a good health, a study has found.

Those who are tidy and organised are found to have better personal hygiene than more chaotic people, the Daily Express reported.

According to the study, well-mannered people tend to maintain better hygiene and take better care of their well-being and health. As a result, they suffer less from colds and cases of diarrhoea and are two-and-a-half times more likely to be in good health than those with poor manners.

Elderly people look after their health more than the young people and also have better manners, states the study conducted by Dettol and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

John Oxford, chairman of the Hygiene Council and professor of virology at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, said: "Everyone can change their behaviour and help to break the chain of infection. Good manners are also at the heart of it - being aware and thinking how our behaviour affects us and those around us."

"We're not powerless against infectious disease - everyone can contribute through simple hygiene measures such as washing our hands."

It also states the homemakers have the highest levels of personal and household hygiene, while office workers and students have the worst. Women also tend to be more hygienic than men.

TAMARIND DERIVATIVES REPAIRS DAMAGE BRAIN CELLS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Thursday, June 9, 2011 1 comments

Sydney : A compound from tamarind tree could help spur the growth of damaged brain and spinal cord nerve cells, which characterises diseases such as Parkinson's.

Doctoral student Andrew Rodda from Monash University's materials engineering team investigated xyloglucan, a compound from tamarind seeds and how it affects animals with damaged nerves.

The derivative that Rodda developed from xyloglucan can be injected into an injury site as a liquid, before becoming a gel as it reaches body temperature.

Once in place, it acts as a support structure through which healthy cells can migrate and potentially reattach themselves to the nervous system.

Until now, all damage to the nerve cells of the central nervous system - the brain and spinal cord - had been considered irreparable, according to a Monash statement.

Rodda said the lack of repair or regrowth is due mainly to the toxic environment left behind after nerve death. 'Nerve cells are sensitive, and will only grow in the most supportive of environments.'

'After injury, new cells cannot normally penetrate into the empty space left after mass cell death. Cells clump at the edges, forming an impenetrable barrier. This leaves the centre of the wound as a lesion, which contains chemicals that kill growing nerves.'

Rodda said the new compound works by providing a temporary scaffold on which new cells can grow and penetrate the lesion.

Significantly, it was the helper cells, known as astrocytes, which were the first to move into the implanted gel. These cells secrete beneficial chemicals, which may have helped create an environment in which the delicate nerve cells can survive.

MUD THERAPY

Mud therapy is being used by people to treat diseases since ancient times. It is believed that the earth has healing powers which are refreshing and invigorating for the body.
The material used for mud therapy is mostly clay, taken from 4 inches below the surface of the earth. The clay should be free of any impurities such as pebbles, decaying matter etc.

How mud therapy can benefit you
·         Mud therapy is especially good for treating skin diseases. Wet clay absorbs toxins in the skin. The clay is then thrown away after drying.
·         Mud applications increase the beauty of the skin. They increase blood circulation, energize skin tissue, improve complexion and clear spots and patches on the skin.
·         Mud therapy can be used in conjunction with other treatments to heal chronic inflammation caused by internal diseases, bruises, sprains, boils and wounds.
·         Mud packs have been found to be useful in treating diseases relating to general weakness and nervous disorders. The cooling effect of mud packs can also bring down fever.
·         Some diseases which mud packs can help treat are scarlet fever, influenza, measles, swellings, eye and ear troubles, gout, rheumatism, stomach troubles, kidney problems, liver malfunction, diphtheria,neuralgia, sexual disorders, headache, tooth ache and other general pains.
·         Applying mud to the abdomen can cure indigestion, flatulence and intestinal obstructions. It is also helpful in amoebiasis, colitis, enteritis and other bacterial diseases.

How mud is applied to the body
Mud packs: Clay taken from the earth is mixed with warm water so that it becomes a smooth paste. It is allowed to cool, and then spread on a strip of cloth. The size of the cloth depends on which part of the body the mud pack is to be applied.
The cloth covered with mud is placed on the part of the body which is to be treated. It is then covered with some protective material, like flannel. The mud pack is removed after 10 to 30 minutes.

Mud baths:
 Mud bath covers the whole body. Clay is mixed with so that a smooth paste is formed. The clay is spread on a huge cloth. The cloth is then wrapped around the body.
Another way to have a mud bath is to just cover yourself directly with the clay. Many people frolic in mud puddles in groups to get maximum enjoyment and benefit out of a mud bath.
Mud Therapy – Mud Treatment
Mud treatment has become very popular because of several reasons such as detoxifying skin, blood circulation , purifying skin and anti-aging treatment. In a spa treatment the mud which is used contains several types of clay and minerals in it. However, there are types of mud treatment which can be used with a different variety of mud.
 Peat Therapy:- Peat therapy is one type of mud treatment which has several uses such as detoxification, insomnia, relaxation, arthritis, musculoskeletal pain, infertility and stimulation of immune system. It is a type of mud which contains sulfur, humic, water, cellulose and fulvic acids in it. It can be applied as a hot or cold pack. One may also add this mud with hot or cold water. This peat therapy can be applied in one’s house or can be done at a spa.
Peloid Therapy:- This mud therapy is used to treat skin diseases, sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, gynecological as well as common problems such as blemishes, wrinkles and blackheads. Peloid therapy is very expensive and it can be performed in a mud treatment spa. This mud consists of virgin clay, minerals and humus.
Parafango Packs:- These packs help in the degradation of the collagen and elastane in the skin. It not only soothes the muscle but also reduces localised swelling around the joints. Parafango pack contains volcanic mineral ash, extract of the seaweed and paraffin in it.
Mud Masks:- This type of mud treatment helps in treating skin blemishes as a part of anti-aging treatment. Mud Masks are inexpensive and are easily available at any beauty store. Mud masks contains dyes and perfumes in it which may cause allergic reaction to individuals who have a sensitive skin.

WHAT IS THE HALLELUJAH DIET... CHECK IT OUT & STAY HEALTHY

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Wednesday, June 8, 2011 0 comments

The Hallelujah diet is a vegan diet, which mostly consists of raw organic foods and partly cooked foods. This diet is the basis of the Hallelujah Diet Program. It advocates going back to the roots - something that the diet equates with the philosophy that God meant us to 'survive on raw foods.' Not to take away from the diet's weight loss goals, it considers this belief an optimum weight loss program. This diet was discovered by Rev. George Malkmus, who also calls this diet "God's way to optimal health."

How does the Hallelujah diet work?
If you cut out pretty much everything that mankind has created for consumption, there is no doubt that this diet will aid weight loss. But is the weight loss healthy or not, is the main concern. Daily food intake is limited to such an extent that the scarcity of nutrition and calorie content in the body can get alarming. At times, it might become difficult to satisfy hunger and cravings if one follows this diet strictly.

A typical day of the Hallelujah diet looks like:
  • Breakfast- Grass juice in powdered form and organic barley.
  • Mid-morning snack- 1 piece of fruit or 1 tall glass of fresh vegetable juice.
  • Lunch- Again organic barley along with a raw fruit or vegetable.
  • Mid-afternoon snack- 1 piece of fruit or vegetable
  • Dinner- Again one serving of organic barley along with green leafy salad. One can also eat one or more than one choice of these food items- baked sweet potato, whole grain or steamed veggies.

Foods not allowed in the Hallelujah diet:
One must stay away from sugar of any form, processed food items, dried fruits, sporty drinks, coffee, alcohol, hydrogenated oils, refined flours and tinned food items, not to mention the vegan nature that cancels out all meat and dairy.

What's wrong with the Hallelujah diet:
For someone who wants to exercise - everything. This works quite similarly to a regular crash diet that limits daily food intake to drastically low levels. Aside from religious dogma, this diet is based on the theory that if you don’t eat any kind of addictive or junk food items, then you are bound to stay within your right body weight.

Only cons: This diet has received severe criticism as it doesn't promote eating from all food groups, leaving your body devoid of essential nutrients such as fibers and phytochemicals. This diet is full of nutritional deficiencies which might promote extreme levels of hunger in you leaving you physically exhausted. While this diet also advocates 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity in a day, we fail to see how the daily food intake can support any of it.

Several studies on natural remedies for diabetes are going on in different parts of the world. Two of the most prominent studies on this subject are based on use of Sweet potato and Ginkgo Biloba for reducing blood sugar levels in patients suffering from diabetes. This article will inform you about the basics of these two researches.

Researchers are involved in studies for finding out the effects of Ipomoea batatas plants on diabetics. Ipomoea batatas plants are plants growing white sweet potatoes and are primarily found in the mountains ranges of Japan.  The natives of Japan have been using white sweet potatoes for treating health disorders like diabetes, anemia and hypertension for centuries. Recently, as study was conducted on the effects of extracts of white sweet potatoes on blood sugar levels of individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study was carried out in Italy and Austria and involved 60 participants.

Each of these participants consumed 4g of sweet potato extracts known as caiapo. After 3 months, majority of these patients reported a reduction in blood sugar levels by as much as 15 points. However, when these participants took 2g of caiapo, they didn’t experience any curative effect. According to the researchers involved in this study, caiapo works by decreasing the patient’s insulin resistance. Several tests are still going on to establish a definite link between decrease in blood sugar levels and Ipomoea batatas plants.

The other significant study on natural remedies for diabetes is the research on effects of Ginkgo Biloba on the diabetics. The use of this herb as a diabetes remedy is extremely common in China and Japan. Ginkgo Biloba is known to be a rich source of antioxidants, which according to experts regulates the hormone levels in human body.Hope so this collection of information will be big relief for the diabetics patiences.HAPPY READING...

HOT STONE THERAPY...

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Tuesday, June 7, 2011 3 comments

What is hot stone therapy?

At the start of a hot stone therapy, smooth water-heated basalt stones are carefully applied to key points on the body. This direct heat relaxes the muscles, which means that the massage itself is more effective and intense than it would be otherwise. The size of the stones varies, according to which part of the body they're being used on.

The stones are coated in fragrant oil to increase your sense of relaxation and calm. When oil is smoothed gently onto the body, each stone in turn can be worked along by the therapist's hands. Most therapists will alternate the application of the warm stones with frozen or cooling marble ones, aimed at stimulating the nervous system.
What is hot stone therapy good for?

After a vigorous game of rugby, players will often sit in ice-baths to reduce muscle swelling; the less extreme among us have a hot bath! It is generally accepted that treatments of warmth and cold are beneficial, and help to soothe an aching body. What we often need to do is combine both hot and cold. There's a method behind the apparent madness of leaping from a toasty sauna into an icy pool - and hot stone therapy uses the same principle. The hot stones expand the blood vessels and the cold ones constrict them. The warm stones sedate the nervous system and the cooler stones gently wake it up again.

The combination of relaxing warmth and refreshing coolness is thought to encourage the body to detox and heal, increasing lymph flow and helping to flush out waste. The body becomes relaxed in a much shorter space of time, and the therapist can focus on a deep working of the tissues using both stone and hand strokes.
A good hot stone therapy should:
    * boost your circulation
    * release stored tension
    * recharge your energy levels
    * relax you.
Hot stone therapy is said to have health benefits for people with:
    * muscular pain
    * poor circulation
    * rheumatic and arthritic conditions
    * fibromyalgia
    * multiple sclerosis (MS)
    * back pain
    * stress
    * insomnia
    * depression.
As with all spa therapies, you should never underestimate the feel-good factor. Hot stone massage will make you feel nurtured, pampered and special.
Before you go
You're in for a treat, so indulge in your day as much as you can. Arrive early so you have time enough to relax, absorb your surroundings and look forward to your therapy. You won't be able to wear much for this treatment, so check with the spa beforehand if you have any worries. It's usually fine to wear bikini bottoms or knickers during a massage and - worry not - your therapist will be highly skilled at preserving your modesty with strategically-placed towels.

The essential oils used in spa therapies will make you smell and feel beautiful, but they can be very hostile towards hairstyles. It's best to book hot stone treatments on a day when you won't have to rush out somewhere afterwards. Besides, you'll feel so relaxed and soothed after your treatment, jumping in the car and tackling the rush hour traffic might seem sacrilegious after a hard day's pampering.

It's not a good idea to eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol in the hours running up to your hot stone therapy.
Precautions
Before your treatment begins, you will probably be asked about any medical conditions you have. It's important at this stage to share anything significant, as your therapist will take your medical history into account when choosing the right products and techniques for your body.

For similar reasons, it's also important to tell your therapist if you are, or think you might be, pregnant.
What to expect from a hot stone treatment
You'll be able to undress and lie down in private, while your therapist waits outside. When you're ready, she will place the warm, oiled stones on many different acupressure points around your body, perhaps even tiny ones between each of your toes. As you relax, you may start drifting off into a dreamy state and stop counting or noticing where the stones are being arranged.

Your therapist will then use a variety of strokes and techniques to massage you, working the stones and her hands over the kinks in your muscles. The massage may be quite strong, although you are unlikely to feel the intensity since your muscles will be relaxed by the stones. The therapist will probably alternate between the hot basalt stones and much colder, marble ones.

As your body sinks further into a state of relaxation, you may even stop noticing the extreme change in temperature. Your treatment is likely to last about an hour; plenty of time for melting away all your knots, aches and worries.
Hot tip!
Don't be afraid to tell your therapist if the stones are too warm for you. You'll relax much more quickly and start enjoying that delicious feeling of total wellbeing.
Afterwards
You will probably feel deeply relaxed, blissed-out and meditative after your massage. Some people have reported closing their eyes and seeing bright colours. Enjoy the afterglow, float slowly back to the real world and re-hydrate your body by sipping plenty of water.
Different kinds of hot stone therapy
LaStone is a branded form of hot stone therapy and one you are likely to encounter in UK spas. But it is by no means the only stone treatment available. Nowadays, various treatments feature hot stones; they are sometimes described as "advanced" versions of their regular treatments in the promotional material. Hot stones also feature in more traditional massage treatments, such as Lomi Lomi.
