Squid as food are prepared in different ways in different countries. It can be grilled, added to various cooking preparations including pasta, or fried in cooking oil either plain or battered and served with a choice of dips including lemon, ketchup, mayonnaise, olive oil, and soy sauce.

Helps the body  absorb and utilize iron (copper)

Squid can provide the body with 90% of copper,, a trace mineral which plays a role in the absorption, storage and metabolism of iron and the formation of red blood cells (RBC). Copper deficiency may show in the form of anemia.
2.        Lowers inflammation (selenium)
Studies have shown that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis have low selenium levels in their blood. In addition, selenium is also an antioxidant which may help relieve symptoms of arthritis by controlling free radicals. Squid contains 63% of selenium.
3.       Helps maintain healthy skin, muscles, hair and nails (protein)
Protein is one of the essential nutrients that the human body needs to keep it healthy. It has many health benefits, one of the most important is keeping the skin, muscles, hair and nails in top shape. Good sources of complete protein come from animals and that includes the squid.
4.       Helps ease migraine headaches (vitamin B2)
Squid are rich in vitamin B2 (riboflavin), a nutrient which several studies have shown lowers the frequency and duration of migraines. Although findings were preliminary, research data suggest that riboflavin supplementation may be a good addition to migraine prevention treatment.
5.        Builds bones and teeth (phosphorous)
Just like fish and shrimps, squid is also packed with the mineral phosphorus. Phosphorus aids calcium in building bones and teeth.
6.       Helps lower risk of heart disease (vitamin B12)
Squid are good sources of vitamin B12, one of the nutrients which have shown to lower homocystein levels in the body. Individuals with elevated homocystein levels have shown to have higher rates of stroke, heart attack and death from heart disease compared to those with normal levels.
7.       Helps stabilize blood sugar levels (vitamin B3)
Eating these marine cephalopods may helps stabilize sugar levels with the help of their supply of vitamin B3.
8.       Boost immune system (zinc)
Squid are good sources of zinc. Individuals who are deficient in zinc have shown to be susceptible to a range of infectious organisms.
9.       Relaxes nerves and muscles  (magnesium)
Squid is a good source of magnesium called the “smoothie mineral” because of its ability to relax nerves and muscles.
10.   Helps lower blood pressure levels (potassium)
Being a good source of potassium, squid helps regulate blood pressure levels.
In addition to the 10 nutrients mentioned above, squid also contains vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron and manganese.
Cholesterol alert
If you're watching your cholesterol intake, you should consider moderating your squid consumption as this cephalopod contains one of the highest cholesterol content among seafoods at 221 mg or 74% for every 3 oz serving size.

HERBAL REMEDIES BEAT BRAIN CANCER

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Sunday, July 17, 2011 2 comments

Washington: Indirubin, a herbal compound used in traditional Chinese remedies might beat deadly brain tumours.

Indirubin is derived from the Indigo plant, an active ingredient in the Dang Gui Long Hui Wan formula that is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia.

Researchers from the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Centre (OSUCCC) discovered indirubin, a compound that blocks migration of glioblastoma cells and endothelial cells, halting them from forming cancerous blood vessels.

(The endothelium is the thin layer of cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels).

Glioblastomas affect about 18,500 Americans annually and kill nearly 13,000 of them yearly. It is the most common and lethal form of the brain cancer malignancy, with an average survival of 15 months after diagnosis, the journal Cancer Research reports.

'We have pretty good methods to stop glioblastoma from growing in the human brain, but these therapies fail because tumour cells migrate from the original site and grow elsewhere in the brain,' says co-principal investigator E. Antonio Chiocca, professor in neurological surgery at Ohio.

'Our findings suggest that Indirubin offers a novel therapeutic strategy for these tumours that simultaneously targets tumour invasion and angiogenesis,' Chiocca says, according to an Ohio statement.

Angiogenesis is the process involving the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels.

BITTER GOURD

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Saturday, July 16, 2011 0 comments

Definitely an acquired taste, bitter gourd (Latin Momordica charantia) is also called Balsam pear or bitter melon. Young immature bitter gourds are the best for cooking: the skin is bright green in color, the flesh inside is white, and the seeds are small and tender. The vegetable is ridged, and the skin is pebbly in texture. Do not use mature bitter gourds, and do not eat bitter gourd if you are pregnant or nursing.

Bitter gourd contains vitamin A, B1, B2, and C. It also contains minerals like calcium, phosphorous, iron, copper and potassium. From the ayurvedic perspective, bitter gourd is excellent for balancing Kapha. It helps purify blood tissue, enhances digestion, and stimulates the liver.

As the name implies, this vegetable is a melon that is bitter.  There are two varieties of this vegetable:  One grows to about 20 cm long, is oblong and pale green in color.  The other is the smaller variety, less than 10 cm long, oval and has a darker green color.

The bitter melon (also known as bitter gourd) looks like a cucumber but with ugly gourd-like bumps all over it.

Both varieties have seeds that are white when unripe and that turn red when they are ripe.  The vegetable-fruit turn reddish-orange when ripe and becomes even more bitter.
Bitter gourd thrives in hot and humid climates, so are commonly found in Asian countries and South America.

Few other fruits/vegetables offer medicinal properties for these ailments like bitter melon does.
Westerners may not be so used to bitter melons, so may find them more difficult to consume.  But if you can generally take bitter taste, you may be able to take this too.  Try it, at least for all its healthful virtues!

Blood disorders:  Bitter gourd juice is highly beneficial for treating blood disorders like blood boils and itching due to toxemia.  Mix 2 ounces of fresh bitter gourd juice with some lime juice.  Sip it slowly on an empty stomach daily for between four and six months and see improvement in your condition.
Cholera:  In early stages of cholera, take two teaspoonfuls juice of bitter gourd leaves, mix with two teaspoonfuls white onion juice and one teaspoonful lime juice.  Sip this concoction daily till you get well.
Diabetes mellitus:  Bitter melon contains a hypoglycemic compound
(a plant insulin) that is highly beneficial in lowering sugar levels in blood and urine.  Bitter melon juice has been shown to significantly improve glucose tolerance without increasing blood insulin levels.

Energy:  Regular consumption of bitter gourd juice has been proven to improve energy and stamina level.  Even sleeping patterns have been shown to be improved/stabilized.
Eye problems:  The high beta-carotene and other properties in bitter gourd makes it one of the finest vegetable-fruit that help alleviate eye problems and improving eyesight.
Hangover:  Bitter melon juice may be beneficial in the treatment of a hangover for its alcohol intoxication properties.  It also help cleanse and repair and nourish liver problems due to alcohol consumption.
Immune booster:  This bitter juice can also help to build your immune system and increase your body's resistance against infection.
Piles:  Mix three teaspoonfuls of juice from bitter melon leaves with a glassful of buttermilk. Take this every morning on empty stomach for about a month and see an improvement to your condition.  To hasten the healing, use the paste of the roots of bitter melon plant and apply over the piles.
Psoriasis:  Regular consumption of this bitter juice has also been known to improve psoriasis condition and other fungal infections like ring-worm and athletes feet.
Respiratory disorders:  Take two ounces of fresh bitter melon juice and mix with a cup of honey diluted in water.  Drink daily to improve asthma, bronchitis and pharyngitis.
Toxemia:  Bitter gourd contains beneficial properties that cleanses the blood from toxins.  Sip two teaspoonfuls of the juice daily to help cleanse the liver.  Also helpful in ridding jaundice for the same reasons.

Choose unripe bitter melons that are firm, like how you would a cucumber.  Avoid those that have turned orange or have soft spots.  Ripe bitter melons can be excessively bitter.Store bitter melons in the vegetable bin in the refrigerator which has the right temperature.  It should keep for three to four days.Keeping bitter melons at room temperature or with other fruits and vegetables will hasten the melon to ripen and become more bitter, due to the emission of ethylene gas.

Clean your bitter melon under cold running water and brush with a soft vegetable brush.  To prepare, slice the melon length-wise and scoop out the seeds.  To lessen the bitter flavor, soak it in salt water for about half an hour before juicing/cooking.
The smaller variety is more bitter than the bigger one.  To help make bitter gourd juice more palatable, take it with honey, or add carrot or apple juice.  For diabetics, drink the juice with green apple juice.

SOLAR ENERGY

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Friday, July 15, 2011 2 comments

There are many reasons that you should be trying to do well for the environment. There is a lot of pollution nowadays, and the earth has suffered because of things like greenhouse gasses and global warming. There are many things you can do, such as recycling and not driving whenever possible, but there are greater things that you can do to participate. Using solar power energy is one of these things.

How It Works
It is easy to understand how solar power energy works, at least if you’re somewhat familiar with the subject. Basically, you will collect the power using the solar power panels that have been installed on your house.
The panels will collect the sunshine and store it when there is sunshine. This doesn’t mean that you can only use solar power energy during the day, because you are going to find that there is much more collected during each day than could possibly be used.
You are going to find that you can use your solar power energy during the day and night, and even that you are going to be making extra that you can sell back to the power company.
It means that with most solar power energy, you are not only saving part of the environment and doing your part not to use fossil fuels; you are also going to find that you might be making some money off of the deal.

Why It’s Important
Nowadays the solar power is widely used to many areas. Most of all, it is important because this is not something that can be used up. The potential from the solar power energy is always there, but if you don’t harness it, you are going to find that it simply fades away, and that you don’t use it.
There is no harm in taking it, because it is going to be there every day. This means that you are never going to run out, and there is never going to be any harm done to the earth or to the atmosphere if you take some solar power energy each and every day.
Try our best to save what we can save. This is something that the earth simply gives to us, and if you can find a way to harness and to use it, you are going to see that you are doing wonders for the environment, and that you are doing great things for everyone around you.

LEECH

Leech is a small blood-sucking worm that lives in the water. The adult leech is a hermaphrodite, meaning it has both male and female sex organs. Leeches reproduces by cross-fertilized eggs, it grows to the length of less than an inch (2.5cm) to 12inces (30cm) or more. Most leeches feed mainly on blood, but others eat worms, insect larvae, and other small forms of animal life. Few leeches actually require blood as food, though most will accept this food if the chance arises.
Medicinal leech is cross barred with brown and black and grows to eight inches (20cm) in length. The medicinal leech has a sucker at each end of the underside of its body. The sucker at one end contains the animal's mouth. The other sucker acts as a suction cup when the leech attaches itself to its victim. Once attached, the leech slashes its victim's skin with its sharp teeth and sucks the blood. The leech injects into the wound a substance that keep blood from clotting. A leech can ingest up to five times its weight in blood and then live up to 18 months without food.
In the 18th century when bloodletting(is the withdrawal of considerable quantities of blood from patient in the belief that this will cure or prevent diseases) was a common treatment for disease, physician used leeches to treat headache, arthritis, tuberculosis, lumbago, gout, and many other illnesses.
Other Uses of Leeches in Medicine:
  • Leeches are still used sometimes to clear up the discoloration of black eyes.
  • Saliva of leeches contains anti-inflammatory substances and other chemicals, which could relieve symptoms of arthritis.
  • Leeches are also used after surgery and other treatments involving the reattachment of skin flaps to reestablish blood flow and promote healing in skin flaps, doctors not only must reattach arteries to enable the oxygen-rich blood to flow into traumatized tissue, they should also make sure that blood flows through and out of the tissue into reconnected veins. With the use of plastic surgery, reattached skin flaps present a challenge in reestablishing blood flow. The doctors will placed leeches on areas where normal blood flow should be restored, the leeches will then suck blood from such tissue, restoring blood flow and promoting healing.

CHEESE

New research suggests that a daily helping ofcheese could increase the risk of bladder cancer.

Eating more than 53g – roughly the same size as a small chocolate bar – raises the chance of the disease by 50 per cent.

On the other hand, a daily portion of olive oil, can more than halve the risk of getting the disease.

Researchers set out to discover if saturated fats, such as those found in meat and dairy products, made cancer more likely and healthier fats, such as olive oil, offered some protection.

They studied the eating habits of 200 bladder cancer victims and compared them with 386 volunteers who had not developed tumours.

The results showed eating cheese had little effect unless the amount exceeded 53g a day. After that, the risk went up by more than half.

But the Dutch and Belgian researchers stressed the numbers of people in the study may be too small to conclude that cheese is a major health threat and called for further investigations to verify their findings.

Other foods, such as fish, chicken, eggs and margarine, appeared to have little effect.

"We found a potentially protective effect from a high intake of olive oil and a suggestive increased risk from high cheese consumption," the Daily Mail quoted the researchers as saying.

SITTING FOR LONG TIME CAUSE HEART PROBLEM

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Friday, July 8, 2011 1 comments

Washington: Something as simple as sitting for long periods in one posture daily is fraught with grave risks, especially for women.

Such women are two to three times more likely to develop a life-threatening blood clot in their lungs than more active women, according to a new study.

This is the first study to prove that a sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of developing a pulmonary embolism - a common cause of heart disease.

Pulmonary embolism develops when part, or all, of the blood clot travels through the bloodstream from the deep veins in the leg and up into the lungs. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, chest pain and coughing, reports the British Medical Journal.

While other studies have explored the relationship between physical activity and pulmonary embolism, few data are available linking the condition with physical inactivity.

Christopher Kabrhel, of the department of emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and colleagues studied 69,950 female nurses over an 18-year period providing detailed information about their lifestyle habits by completing biennial questionnaires.

They found that the risk of pulmonary embolism is more than two times higher in women who spend most time sitting (more than 41 hours a week outside of work) compared with those who spend least time sitting (less than 10 hours a week outside of work), according to a Massachusetts statement.

The results remained conclusive after taking account of factors such as age, body mass index and smoking, adding to the evidence that physical inactivity is a major cause of this condition.

The study also shows that physical inactivity correlated with heart disease and hypertension could be one of the hidden mechanisms that link arterial disease and venous disease.

DIET DRINKS COULD MAKE YOU PILE ON POUNDS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Tuesday, July 5, 2011 0 comments

London: Diet drinks are the calorie-free way of having a sweet treat, but beware, they could still make you pile on extra pounds.

A 10-year American study of about 500 men and women linked low-calorie soft drinks with expanding girths -- even when taken in small quantities.

Those who downed two or more diet fizzy drinks a day saw their waistbands expand at five times the rate of those who never touched it.

The results were so dramatic that the researchers advise that people ditch their diet drinks and use water to quench their thirst instead, according to the Daily Mail.

Professor Helen Hazuda, University of Texas's Health Science Centre, said diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may foster a sweet tooth, distort appetite and even damage key brain cells.

The professor, who no longer drinks diet colas and lemonades, said: 'They may be free of calories but not of consequences.'

Hazuda tracked the health and habits of 474 adults for an average of nine-and-a-half years. She then compared the growth in waistline of those who consumed diet drinks with the others, including some who only buy regular fizzy drinks.

Overall, those who favoured diet drinks saw their waists expand 70 percent faster.

The effect was especially pronounced in those who watched a lot of television. Children aged six to 13, who were shown commercials for high fat and high carbohydrate foods, were more likely to pick meals that were bad for them.

These children in particular wanted burgers and fries instead of a salad.

African American women who consumed a diet high invegetables and fruit gained less weight over a 14-year period than those who consumed a diet high in red meatand fried foods, investigators from the Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University have found.

This is the first prospective study to show that a healthier diet is associated with less weight gain in African American women, a population with a high prevalence ofobesity.

The study results were based on data from the Black Women's Health Study (BWHS), a large follow-up study of 59,000 African American women from across the U.S. conducted since 1995.

The researchers found that women who consumed a diet high in vegetables and fruit gained less weight over 14 years than women whose diets were low in these foods. Women who consumed a diet high in meat and fried foods gained more weight than women with low intake of these foods.

"A diet high in red meat and fried foods can lead to consuming too many calories because these foods contain more calories than the same amount of vegetables and fruit," said lead author and researcher Dr. Deborah Boggs.

The health benefits of broccoli along with the easy availiability of this super vegetable make it one of our most popular vegetables.

Throughout the year, broccoli is one of the easiest foods to locate, as most supermarkets across the United States offer a hearty supply of the nutrient-rich vegetable.

While broccoli has gotten a bad reputation as being one of the most dreaded vegetables on the dinner plate for a child, there are actually many different delicious ways to prepare the vegetable with the alluring green stalk and bushy top.

In addition to satisfying the daily requirements for fruit and vegetable intake, there are a variety of health benefits attached to the consumption of broccoli.

Broccoli provides a high amount of vitamin C, which aids iron absorption in the body, prevents the development of cataracts, and also eases the symptoms of the common cold.

The folic acid in broccoli helps women sustain normal tissue growth and is often used as a supplement when taking birth control pills and during pregnancies.

The potassium in broccoli aids those battling high blood pressure, while a large amount of calcium helps combat osteoporosis.

In recent years, broccoli has made the headlines regarding three components found in the vegetable. For instance, indole-3-carbinol has captured the attention of those looking to prevent hormone-related cancers, such as breast- and prostate cancer.
I3C promotes "good" hormones, while working against destructive ones. The sulforaphane in broccoli also helps to increase the level of enzymes that block cancer, while the beta-carotene in broccoli transforms into vitamin A within the body, providing an effective antioxidant that destroys free radicals (responsible for weakening the defense of cells).

Cooking With Broccoli

While it may take some a bit of time to get used to eating raw broccoli, the use of French onion, ranch, or other dips help bring broccoli to life.

My personal favorite is to shread the broccoli stems and make broccoli slaw. Just use your favorite cole slaw recipe and substitute the broccoli for cabbage.

Some people avoid eating the stems of the vegetable, but peeling away the tough outer skin, slicing then into small pieces, or cooking them whole tastes great with a little teriyaki sauce. Overall, to get the health benefits of broccoli, it can be boiled, steamed, eaten raw, and baked with great-tasting accompaniments, such as a good tasting creamy cheese.

Broccoli also decorates casseroles, rice dishes, and is an excellent addition to a salad.

This versatile vegetable is also used to make delicious soups, including the Broccoli Cheese and Cream of Broccoli options commonly served at high end restaurants.

When preparing the vegetable, it is important to remember that overcooking broccoli equals a reduction in vital nutrients (especially when boiling in water). To savor every last drop of vitamins and healthy components, you should try steaming, microwaving, or preparing broccoli in a tasty stir-fry.

Also, the next time you're shopping for vegetables, note that some broccoli tops appear purplier than others, meaning they possess a higher level of carotenoids, which is better for your health.
