DIET BOOSTER WARDS OFF PREGNANCY SYNDROME

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Tuesday, May 24, 2011 0 comments

PARIS — A dietary supplement of amino acid and antioxidant vitamins can reduce the risk for pregnant women of a dangerous condition called pre-eclampsia, according to a study released on Friday.

Affecting five percent of first-time pregnancies, pre-eclampsia leads to abnormally high blood pressure, protein build-up in urine, and swelling in the feet and ankles.
Its causes are unknown and the only way to alleviate potentially life-threatening symptoms is to give birth.
Earlier research showed a link to a deficiency in L-arginine, an amino acid that helps to maintain a healthy blood flow during pregnancy.
Some experts have also suggested that antioxidant vitamins can help ward off the condition.
Researchers led by Felipe Vadillo-Ortego at National University in Mexico City designed a study to find out if a combination of L-arginine and antioxidants would prevent onset.
Some 750 pregnant women in Mexico City at high risk of pre-eclampsia were randomly divided into three groups.
A third received daily food bars containing both L-arginine and antioxidant vitamins, a third bars containing only vitamins, and a third placebo bars.
The supplements began when women were around 20 weeks pregnant and continued until delivery.
The proportion of women developing pre-eclampsia was 30.2 percent in the placebo group, 22.5 percent in the vitamin only group, and 12.7 percent in the L-arginine plus vitamin group.
The dietary supplement also significantly reduced the risk of premature birth compared with placebo, said the study, published online by the British Medical Journal.
“This relatively simple and low-cost intervention may have value in reducing the risk of pre-eclampsia and associated preterm birth,” the authors conclude.
Further study is needed, however, to determine whether these results can be repeated.

BINGE DRINKING IMPAIRS MEMORY OF YOUNGSTERS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Monday, May 23, 2011 1 comments

Binge drinking can attack memory even in adults as young as 18 years of age, a Spanish study has found.

Heavy alcohol consumption makes it more difficult to build new memories because the hippocampus, a brain area which plays a vital role in learning and memory, succumbs to its poisonous effects, researchers at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain claim.

'Binge drinking could affect memory of young adults, which might affect their day-to day lives,' said researcher Maria Parada.

The study examined 122 Spanish university students aged 18 to 20 years of age divided into two groups -- those who engaged in binge drinking and those that abstained. They were then subjected to a neuropsychological assessment which included recalling visual and verbal experiences.

'Most attention has focused on negative consequences such as traffic accidents, violence or public disorder, society and students themselves are unaware of the damaging effects binge drinking may have on the brain,' Parada added.

These findings are particularly worrisome as binge drinking is a growing problem in the UK and other European countries -- particularly among the young, as published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

Ancient Greek athletes consumed honey to boost their energy and performance levels during Olympics events as it contains glucose and fructose, known to produce tremendous reserves of glycogen in the liver.

Having a spoonful of unprocessed honey before bed can support your brain function. The fructose is stored as energy reserves in the liver, ready to fuel the brain overnight.

Indeed, honey boosts the immune system and has an antibacterial effect internally and externally, helping the body to heal.

Colds are caused by viruses and honey is a natural antiviral. In a Pennsylvania State College of Medicine study, a spoonful of honey outperformed over-the-counter cold remedies, according to a Penn State statement.

Research in 2007 by Shone Blair at Sydney University concluded that honey dressings for superbug wound infections should be used as a 'first choice'.

Honey supports friendly gut bacteria, aiding digestion, and is good for those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and thrush. According to previous studies, one should consume take two teaspoons three times a day for gastric ulcers.

ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS MAY BE CANCER CAUSING

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Sunday, May 22, 2011 2 comments

Energy saving light bulbs are easy on your purse but they may be deadly for your health as they emit cancer causing chemicals when switched on.

German scientists have warned that they should not be left on for long periods or be positioned near a person's head as they emit poisonous substances.

Peter Braun, who tested these bulbs at the Berlin's Alab Lab, said: 'For such carcinogenic substances, it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.'

The bulbs are already widely used in Britain following an EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year, the Telegraph reports.

But the German scientists said toxins like phenol, naphthalene and styrene, were released when the supposedly green compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on.

Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: 'Electrical smog develops around these lamps.

'I, therefore, use them only very economically. They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.'

The latest report follows claims by Abraham Haim, professor of biology at Haifa University in Israel, that the bulbs could result in higher breast cancer rates if used late at night.

He said the bluer light that CFLs emitted closely mimicked daylight, disrupting the body's production of the hormone melatonin more than older-style filament bulbs, which cast a yellower light.

The Migraine Action Association has warned they could trigger migraines and skin care specialists have claimed their intense light could exacerbate a range of existing skin problems.

London:Just a spoonful of sugar can impart that killing edge to antibiotics against infections.

Researchers found that glucose and fructose -- types of sugar found in plants -- make deadly bugs behind chronic infections more vulnerable to drugs.

Sugar can improve the effectiveness of antibiotics against infections, say researchers.

Such infections often occur when bacteria 'shut down', making antibiotics ineffective against them, reports the journal Nature.

Over time, the bugs, known as 'persisters', return to life, causing patients to relapse, according to the Daily Mail.

Boston University scientists tested the effects of drawing the bacteria out of their hibernation using sugar. They found stimulating the bugs with sugar renders them vulnerable to antibiotic attack.

Testing the strategy on Eschericia coli (E. coli) bacteria, a common cause of urinary infections, the researchers were able to eliminate 99.9 percent of persisters in just two hours.

Without sugar, the drugs they used had no effect. The team now plans to examine whether sugar additives can help fight tuberculosis

MEDICINAL HERBS REPLACE CANNABIS GROWING IN HIMACHAL

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Friday, May 20, 2011 1 comments

Mandi : Once notorious for cannabis cultivation, the hills of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh are now witnessing a welcome change - acres devoted to high-value medicinal herbs.

The harbingers of the silent revolution in the interiors of this Himachal Pradesh district are a women's group motivated by a Shimla-based NGO, Himalayan Research Group (HRG), to grow herbs like chirayita and kataki.

'Finally, we achieved success in commercial production of chirayita or swertia in the fields in the Gohar block of Mandi,' HRG director Lal Singh told IANS.

He said 319 farmers have planted chirayita on over 70 hectares and it was the largest plantation of this medicinal plant in the state.

Last week, the farmers jointly marketed 2,500 kg of dried chirayita to a private firm, Dabur India Ltd of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

'Earlier, chirayita was extracted from the wild only. Since it's the native species of the Himalayas, its cultivation was promoted. For the first time it was grown commercially on such a large tract by involving over 1,500 women,' he said.

The National Medicinal Plants Board in New Delhi has supported the NGO for the spread of chirayita through organised women's groups.

According to forest department officials, the famers were convinced that chirayita cultivation is more profitable.

Chief forest conservator G.S. Goraya said the farmers earned over Rs.700,000 by selling the produce to Dabur at a pre-negotiated rate of Rs.288 per kg.

He said most of the farmers who have adopted its cultivation were earlier involved in traditional crops, mainly cannabis.

'The forest department has started simplifying the forest transit rules for cultivated medicinal plants. At present, the department is charging Rs.7 a kg as permit fee,' Goraya said.

Dubbed a miracle herb, chirayita is said to contain anti-diabetic properties. It's also considered a blood purifier, a liver tonic, and helps in controlling fever.

The award-winning NGO working for women empowerment launched the community-driven plantation scheme in 2004 by involving a handful of farmers. In 2006, a few medicinal companies evinced interest in buying the produce.

'In 2009, 319 farmers were motivated to go for chirayita cultivation. They were provided seeds. The first crop was harvested in October 2010, almost 18 months after its plantation,' Lal Singh said.

'After the cultivation, negotiations were on with pharmaceutical companies. Finally, Dabur agreed to buy the first lot. It will buy other stock too,' he said.

Farmer Veena Devi said: 'Now we will go for a major plantation of chirayita as it's quite remunerative. Moreover, the cannabis cultivation is always lurking with dangers.'

'It's just a small beginning. More farmers would be roped in to adopt high value medicinal plants like 'chirayita' for their self-reliance rather than depending upon cannabis,' Lal Singh added.

Forest officials said 15 medicinal herbs, including chirayita, are in demand by the pharmaceutical industry - for more than 100 tonnes a year.

'We are promoting chirayita along with cultivation of normal cash crops of peas and potatoes. It's being grown on scattered patches where the cultivation of normal crops is not economically viable. Wild animal menace is one of the reasons,' Lal Singh said.

The NGO is also promoting the cultivation of another profitable herb 'kataki' or picroshiza kurroal.

The state government has already signed a contract with Patanjali Yogpeeth of yoga guru Ramdev for purchase of medicinal plants directly from the farmers.

The state has assessed threat status of 57 medicinal plants and an action plan for species-specific conservation is being worked out.

The government is encouraging cultivation of medicinal plants by raising a nursery of 1.75 million plants.

FRUITS , VEGETABLES AND HUMAN BODY

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Wednesday, May 18, 2011 1 comments

CARROTS EYES
SLICE a carrot and it looks just like an eye, right down to the pattern of the iris. Its a clear clue to the importance this everyday veg has for vision. Carrots get their orange colour from a plant chemical called betacarotene, which reduces the risk of developing cataracts. The chemical also protects against macular degeneration an age-related sight problem that affects one in four over-65s. It is the most common cause of blindness in Britain. But popping a betacarotene pill doesnt have the same effect, say scientists at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore

WALNUT BRAIN
THE gnarled folds of a walnut mimic the appearance of a human brain - and provide a clue to the benefits. Walnuts are the only nuts which contain significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. They may also help head off dementia. An American study found that walnut extract broke down the protein-based plaques associated with Alzheimers disease. Researchers at Tufts University in Boston found walnuts reversed some signs of brain ageing in rats. Dr James Joseph, who headed the study, said walnuts also appear to enhance signalling within the brain and encourage new messaging links between brain cells.

TOMATO HEART
A TOMATO is red and usually has four chambers, just like our heart. Tomatoes are also a great source of lycopene, a plant chemical that reduces the risk of heart disease and several cancers. The Womens Health Study ” an American research programme which tracks the health of 40,000 women ” found women with the highest blood levels of lycopene had 30 per cent less heart disease than women who had very little lycopene. Lab experiments have also shown that lycopene helps counter the effect of unhealthy LDL cholesterol. One Canadian study, published in the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine, said there was Å“convincing vidence that lycopene prevented coronary heart disease.

GRAPES LUNGS
OUR lungs are made up of branches of ever-smaller airways that finish up with tiny bunches of tissue called alveoli. These structures, which resemble bunches of grapes, allow oxygen to pass from the lungs to the blood stream. One reason that very premature babies struggle to survive is that these alveoli do not begin to form until week 23 or 24 of pregnancy. A diet high in fresh fruit, such as grapes, has been shown to reduce the risk of lung cancer and emphysema. Grape seeds also contain a chemical called proanthocyanidin, which appears to reduce the severity of asthma triggered by allergy.

CHEESE BONES
A nice ˜holey cheese, like Emmenthal, is not just good for your bones, it even resembles their internal structure. And like most cheeses, it is a rich source of calcium, a vital ingredient for strong bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis later in life. Together with another mineral called phosphate, it provides the main strength in bones but also helps to ˜power muscles. Getting enough calcium in the diet during childhood is crucial for strong bones. A study at Columbia University in New York showed teens who increased calcium intake from 800mg a day to 1200mg equal to an extra two slices of cheddar - boosted their bone density by six per cent.

GINGER STOMACH
Root ginger, commonly sold in supermarkets, often looks just like the stomach. So its interesting that one of its biggest benefits is aiding digestion. The Chinese have been using it for over 2,000 years to calm the stomach and cure nausea, while it is also a popular remedy for motion sickness. But the benefits could go much further.
Tests on mice at the University of Minnesota found injecting the chemical that gives ginger its flavour slowed down the growth rate of bowel tumours.

BANANA (SMILE) DEPRESSION
Cheer yourself up and put a smile on your face by eating a banana. The popular fruit contains a protein called tryptophan. Once it has been digested, tryptophan then gets converted in a chemical neurotransmitter called serotonin. This is one of the most important mood-regulating chemicals in the brain and most anti-depressant drugs work by adjusting levels of serotonin production. Higher levels are associated with better moods.

MUSHROOM EAR
Slice a mushroom in half and it resembles the shape of the human ear. And guess what? Adding it to your cooking could actually improve your hearing. Thats because mushrooms are one of the few foods in our diet that contain vitamin D. This particular vitamin is important for healthy bones, even the tiny ones in the ear that transmit sound to the brain.

BROCCOLI CANCER
Close-up, the tiny green tips on a broccoli head look like hundreds of cancer cells. Now scientists know this disease-busting veg can play a crucial role in preventing the disease. Last year, a team of researchers at the US National Cancer Institute found just a weekly serving of broccoli was enough to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 45 per cent. In Britain, prostate cancer kills one man every hour.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES JUICES

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy 0 comments

Fruit and vegetable juices are not only very tasty, cool, and refreshing, but they rejuvenate and energize instantly as well. They are delicious and healthy at the same time. What is more, fruit juices can be easily made at home. You can even double or triple the health benefits by combining 2-3 different fruit and vegetable juices.
Fruits and vegetables have certain vitamins and minerals, which are not heat- or air-stable. For example, Vitamin C is lost when exposed to heat or air. Therefore, the best way to partake the benefits of most fruits and veggies is to have them in juice form, freshly made. Apart from that, if you were to take fruits and veggies in their natural form, you will not be able to consume as many of them as you can in the juice form and thus derive more benefits.
Beneficial Effects of Some Fruit and Vegetable Juices
Here are some fruit and vegetable juices and their benefits:
1.    Apple Juice: It is not without reason that the old adage goes, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." Apple is so full of nutrients. It is rich in vitamin B and C, and also contain potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus in small amounts. It is rich pectin -- a natural, water-soluble substance which acts as fiberLD. Pectin helps lower the LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) by binding with cholesterol and fats before the body absorbs them. Apple juice has a calming and soothing effect, and helps in cleaning the digestive system. Apple juice is very beneficial during bouts of loose motions (diarrhea). It not only replenishes the lost electrolytes and the fluids, but also helps in solidifying the stool.
2.    Grape Juice: Rich in vitamin B and C, grape juice also contains potassium, iodine, iron, copper, calcium in small amounts. It is rich in antioxidants that help in beating stress and flushing out toxins from the body. Grape juice is an instant refresher that energizes you. It has anti-aging properties, thus keeping the skin and organs youthful. It is also beneficial in conditions like constipation, stress, heart diseases, allergies, and gout.
3. Pomegranate Juice: Rich in antioxidants, pomegranate juice has been proven effective against cancer (more specifically, breast and prostate cancer) and in lowering LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol). Pomegranate juice has three times more antioxidants per 100 ml than does red wine or green tea. The high antioxidant content not only helps to prevent hardening of the arteries (build up of plaque in the walls of arteries, known medically as atherosclerosis), but it may also reverse the progression of this disease. An animal study published in the journal Neurobiology of Disease also show that pomegranate juice may prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
4.   Lemon Juice: These are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, helps improve the immunity of the body. It is also beneficial in weight loss and detoxification of the body.
5.    Carrot Juice: Rich in beta-carotene, carrot juice is a storehouse of multiple vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B, C and K; potassium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, aluminum, sodium, manganese, iron, copper and a lot of other minerals. beta carotene is an excellent antioxidant and has anti-cancerous, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory properties. Carrot juice helps in decreasing LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) and strengthens the blood vessels. Apart from that, it relieves spasm and helps in normalizing the digestive process. Taking carrot juice during pregnancy is very beneficial, as it helps in the fetal development.
6.   Beet Root Juice: This contains vitamins B and C, potassium, manganese, and iron. It is a good stress buster as well as helps in weight loss and insomnia. The combination of carrot and beetroot juice makes it a good drink to keep the menopausal symptoms down in women.
7.  Tomato Juice: Tomato juice is an appetite stimulator and helps in raising the metabolic rate and improving digestion, thus making it very helpful for weight loss. It is also a great source of lycopense, a plant pigment that has been extensively studied for its antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties, and give tomatoes their red color. A glass of tomato juice everyday can help to keep the stress levels low. However, tomato juice should be avoided by those who have kidney stones.
8.    Cranberry Juice: Cranberry juice contain phytochemicals that can help in the prevention of many illnesses such as cardiac problems and cancer. It is a good remedy for urinary tract infection. However, cranberry juice should be avoided by those who have kidney stones as it is rich in oxalates.
9.    Kiwi Juice: Kiwi juice is rich in vitamin C, iron, phosphorus, and potassium. It aids in digestion and can be helpful in conditions such as anorexia (decreased sensation of appetite) and anemia.
When we are so busy running around earning our "daily bread, butter, and cheese," let us not forget to include the "elixir of life," that fruit and veggie juices are, in our daily routine. Find some time to take at least two cups of juice during the day. Ideally, start your day with a fruit/vegetable juice.STAY HEALTHY......

Oregano (Scientific name: Origanum vulgare) is also known as Wild Marjoram, Mountain Mint, Origanum, Wintersweet and Winter Marjoram. This erectly spreading plant has strong aromatic characteristics, with leaves and stems that are fleshy. The leaves of oregano are heart-shaped, with toothed edges, and which, grow for up to 9 meters in length. In other countries, the plant is primarily used as a culinary ingredient. However, in countries like the Philippines, Oregano is a known herbal medicine for its strong anti-oxidant properties. Oregano contains a rosmarinic acid compound, thymol, and carvacrol that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. Oregano also contains flavinoids, triterpenoids, sterols, vitamin C, and vitamin A. Its anti-bacterial properties have been proven by recent studies to treat infections of the reproductive tracts, and which make it ideal to be given to women who have just given birth.

The volatile oils in oregano and its properties are believed to be responsible for slowing the process of spoilage of food and thus minimizing the risk of ingesting harmful bacteria, parasites and fungi. The anti-oxidant properties of oregano helps fight free radicals in the body that cause cellular damage and accelerate ageing. Free radicals are believed to be involved with many degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis and heart diseases, to name a few.

The most useful parts of this plant are its leaves. The extracts and juices of such are used for asthma, dyspepsia, chronic coughs, bronchitis, and rheumatism. Ear aches have also been proven to be cured by the infusion prepared from its leaves. ALOEVERA

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy 0 comments

Plant SourceAloe barbadensis Miller (Family Liliaceae).
Part Used: Leaf gel.
Properties: Healing, pain-relieving, emollient, soothing, anti-inflammatory.
Most Common Traditional Uses:
Internal - General tonic, cleanser, detoxifier.
External - Minor burns, sunburn, eczema, psoriasis, skin irritations, insect bites, minor cuts, scratches and wounds also extensively used as a base for organic skin care.
Other Advocated Uses of Aloe Vera: Too numerous to count

Aloe vera, also known as the true or medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe that is believed to have originated in the Sudan. Aloe vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa, India, and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of aloe vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting.Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, minor skin infections, Sebaceous cyst, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones, and lectins.

Large scale agricultural production of Aloe vera is undertaken in Australia,Bangladesh, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, China, Mexico, India, Jamaica, Kenya and South Africa, along with the USA to supply the cosmetics industry with Aloe vera gel.Aloe vera juice is used for consumption and relief of digestive issues such as heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome, although it bears significant potential to be toxic when taken orally. It is common practice for cosmetic companies to add sap or other derivatives from aloe vera to products such as makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, shaving cream, and shampoos.

Aloe Vera gel normally contains no laxative principles (anthraglycosides). These laxative compounds are only present in cells immediately beneath the skin of the leaf. After the leaf is cut crosswise, the yellow bitter latex containing these compounds drains out of the leaf. When this latex is dried, a dark resinous mass is produced which is commonly called simply aloe. This aloe is a drug and is used in many laxative preparations. A milder form of laxative is also produced from the plant by splitting the whole leaf, drying it and milling it to a powder. Since this product contains considerably lower amounts of anthraglycosides and high concentrations of the gel, its laxative action is considered much less harsh than the concentrated aloe latex.I have noticed in many houses Alovera is been planted in the pot and people consume it directly without any doctors prescriptions.Few species of Aloe vera cause skin rashes, thus its essential to get good advise on which type of aloe vera is harmless... enjoy reading

OLIVE LEAF PILL COULD HEAL HEARTS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Saturday, May 14, 2011 1 comments

Hey friends I came cross an article which was mind blowing, so here its for your review and to learn more on Olive leafs positive effect on health.... happy reading
London: A pill made from the leaves of the olive tree could be a powerful weapon in the fight against heart disease, scientists have said.
According to research, the olive pill is as effective as some prescription medicines at reducing high blood pressure.
And it also appears to lower levels of harmful blood fats, called triglycerides, known to raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
In a study, patients who took the olive leaf pill for eight weeks saw a significant decline in blood pressure readings and triglyceride levels. If further studies confirm the powerful effects of olive leaf tablets, they could be used to help patients who struggle to take blood pressure drugs because of their side-effects.

Biggest killer
Heart disease is Britain's biggest killer. High blood pressure is thought to be responsible for 50 per cent of all heart attacks and strokes.
In recent years, studies have shown olive oil can protect the heart by reducing the build-up of fatty deposits inside the coronary arteries.
Olives have also been credited with helping to lower the risk of breast cancer, ulcerative colitis and even depression. And it seems the trees' thin, flat leaves may also be able to ward off illness, as they have high levels of compounds called polyphenols.
These plant chemicals have been shown to help slash the risk of major diseases by helping to protect against the harmful effects of free radicals. Researchers at the University of Indonesia, in Jakarta, investigated olive leaf extract by recruiting 180 patients with high blood pressure and splitting them into two groups.

Volunteers
One received olive leaf pills for eight weeks. The rest were given an anti-hypertension drug, captopril, which can cause dizziness.
According to the research published in the journal Phytomedicine, systolic blood pressure, the higher reading, dropped an average of 11.5 points in the olive leaf group and 13.7 in the captopril patients. Diastolic blood pressure, the lower reading, fell 4.8 points in the olive leaf volunteers and 6.4 points in those on the prescription medicine.
