20 HOME REMEDIES FOR YOUR HAIR

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Friday, December 28, 2012 0 comments

You cannot rush to a spa, beauty salon, or trichoilogist to fix recurring bad hair days every single day.

Instead, your kitchen is full of ingredients that will make your tresses silky smooth, strong and beautiful. The bonus: Unlike professional hair treatments, these common kitchen ingredients don't cost a fortune! So rush to your kitchen cabinets and refrigerators, and follow these 20 tips to get your hair sorted forever!

For normal hair

Take half a cup of 'amla' powder, add to it two tablespoons of castor oil and one full egg and make into a smooth mixture. Apply on the hair and the scalp, leave on for about 30 minutes before shampooing.

Dry Hair

For women with dry hair, use of a conditioner is a must at all times.

Take half a cup of multani mitti and make a mixture with two tablespoons of coconut oil and the egg yolk. Apply this mixture well on the entire scalp, leave on for about half an hour and shampoo well.

Oily Hair

Make a mixture out of one cup of henna powder to which one tablespoon of lime juice has been added and mix into it the white of an egg. If the egg smell puts you off, use curd instead of the white of an egg. Apply this mixture to the hair, leave on for approximately half an hour and then shampoo. A point to note is that this pack will not colour your hair despite the dying quality of henna being an ingredient.

Massage the scalp using hot coconut oil. You can either use coconut oil or olive oil for best results.

For a protein packed conditioner, mix eggs and yogurt and rub it into your scalp. Leave on for five or 10 minutes, and then wash it off completely.

You can wash hair with a paste made from Neem leaves. This is particularly effective for hair loss caused due to excessive build up of scalp oil or invasive skin infections.

Do not wash your hair in hot water as it can increase the dryness of the scalp, resulting in flaking and scaling of the skin of the scalp. Use lukewarm water instead and shampoo haironly once or twice a week.

You can make your own hair fall-preventing medicine at home by frying some fenugreek (methi) seeds in coconut oil. Strain this mixture and apply it in minimal amounts, rubbed gently into the hair roots. Alternatively, you can boil some henna leaves in mustard oil. After cooling and straining this preparation, add drops of it in your coconut oil container that you are using for regular massaging.

Olive Oil is great for conditioning and shine. Honey can also be combined with Olive Oil on hair to make the results that much more effective. All you need is a small cup of olive oil. Use your hands to rub it in the ends and the mid length of your hair, shampoo after two hours.

For dandruff

Add 1 teaspoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut or neem oil. Store it in glass container. Massage this oil into the scalp before bed.

You can also mix 1 teaspoon of castor, mustard and coconut oil each and massage into the scalp.

Before washing your hair, apply the juice extracted from crushed coriander (dhania) leaves. You can also use a mixture of curd and gram flour (chana atta) that should be kept-on for at least an hour before bathing.

Use a shampoo and a separate hair conditioner. And leave the conditioner on the tip of the hair avoiding the roots for at least 10 to 15 minutes to moisturise the hair and prevent hair fall.

Extract some aloe vera gel and mix it with honey. Apply this on scalp and leave it for twenty minutes.

Regular use of some simple hair packs will provide the much-needed protection and also add sheen to your hair in your busy festive activities. Always remember to condition your hair as per hair type.

Apply 1/2 cup of mayonnaise to your dry hair, work in really well, cover your head with a plastic wrap, and let it set for about 15 minutes.works best for damged hair.

Jojoba oil should be applied mainly to the ends to make it softer. This home remedy can work wonders with frizzy and dry locks.

Another way is to mix one part of lemon juice with two parts of coconut oil. Massage into the roots of the hair regularly. Wash with warm water after three to four hours or leave overnight.

Massaging the hair roots with freshly extracted coconut milk is beneficial in treating hair loss. It should be left on for 15 to 20 minutes and rinsed off. You could follow up with a shampoo and condition.

For itchy scalp, add 1 teaspoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut oil and store it in glass container.Massage this oil into the scalp before bed.

Oily hair

Those having oily hair will need to shampoo their hair very often and hence should make sure that even the mild shampoo used is diluted further. For the last rinse, using white vinegar mixed with water in equal proportions also helps to reduce the oiliness.

WINTER HAIR CARE TIPS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Monday, November 12, 2012 0 comments

The winter may be that gorgeous season of breathtaking foggy mornings and chilly evenings. While cozy woollen clothes can protect your skin from this dry weather, they do nothing for your hair. If you have dry hair, this weather can further turn them brittle, lead to excessive dandruff and render them looking dull and lacklustre!

So if you want moisturised, healthy hair this winter, follow these hair care tips by Najeeb Ur Rehman, National Technical Head, Schwarzkopf Professional India.

Avoid over-washing your hair: During winters, wash your hair periodically. Always use a dry hair protective shampoo and conditioner.
Treat your hair to a cure: At least once a week, pamper your hair with a treatment that will provide them with a lot of moisture and seal the hair surface with conditioning oils.
Stay away from hot irons: Hair straighteners and curlers and the hot air from hair dryers are hard on hair and rid it of all its moisture. Never heat-style your hair, without the benefit of hair protection (a serum). In winters, air-dry your hair as often as possible.
Get regular scalp massages: Scalp massages improve the blood flow to the scalp and stimulate the sebum secretion.
Don't wash your hair with hot water: Washing hair with excessively hot water strips it of all its natural substances. Set the water temperature between tepid and moderately warm. As a finishing touch, rinse the longer part of your hair with cool water. This will make your hair smooth and shiny.
Avoid alcohol-containing products: Try not to style your hair with hair sprays, foam setting products, gels and other products that contain alcohol, as they have a tendency to dry out your hair.
Take good care of your hair accessories: Inspect your hair care tools regularly. Haphazardly manufactured combs and brushes will damage the scalp and further disturb the natural smooth surface of hair.

USE COCONUT OIL FOR SHINY & CURLY HAIRS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Sunday, October 7, 2012 0 comments

The best remedy for frizzy hair is right under our noses - coconut oil

Feel envious of those with smooth silky hair when your own curly mop turns into a frizzy, unruly mess? Well, there's hope. Curly hair requires more care and attention than straight hair but at the end of the day, it will all be worth it; shiny, natural curls can look as good, or even better than dead straight locks, when set properly.

Frizz on the hair is an indication that the hair lacks moisture and oil content. The reasons could be many, from a dry climate, chemical treatments, excessive blow-drying, over-exposure to the sun, lack of proper water intake/nutrition, even stress. A quick solution would be generous use of hair serum but serum only coats the hair and is of no use in the long term. But no, you don't have to spend thousands on high-end products or hair spas for healthy, moisturised hair.

The best answer is right under our noses, which is totally free of side-effects, chemical free and inexpensive - coconut oil. Unlike mineral oils, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and replaces natural moisture in the hair. "The benefits of coconut oil for the scalp and hair have been mentioned in ancient ayurveda as well," says Dr Sureshkumar, an ayurveda doctor. "It also has a cooling effect."

Give your hair a hot oil massage and leave it on for at least an hour. Follow with a mild shampoo but do not blow dry. An additional tip would be to comb your hair with a wide toothed comb before it dries.

Coconut milk is also a good alternative but again, it takes a bit more of effort. Grind a coconut in a blender. Add lemon juice to this and refrigerate. After a while a layer of cream will form on the top. Apply this to your hair and cover the head with a hot towel. Wash off with shampoo after an hour. This concoction is even said to relax tight curls and make them more manageable. Do any of these treatments once a week and you are assured of frizz-free, healthy curls!

FEET CARE DURING RAINS

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Monday, September 17, 2012 0 comments

Foot cleansing: Wash your foot every time you come from outside with a liquid wash.

Ensure you dry your feet completely before wearing new footwear or socks.
The heel is generally cracked and needs to be scrubbed with a pumice stone or a scrub to remove dead cells followed by applying a moisturizing cream. The space between toes has to be cleaned, dried and sprayed with powder, preferably an anti-fungal powder.
Avoid using moisturizing cream or scrubs in this region since it can cause breaks in the soft skin between toe-webs.
Toenail care
Keep your toenails trimmed so that less dirt accumulates underneath the nails and cleaning feet becomes easier.
Don't wear closed shoes as they hold water thereby making the feet sodden. Opt for water proof open strapped footwear.
Dry footwear
Ensure your footwear is dry before you wear it the next day.
It is wise to have two sets of footwear, one for travel in the rains and the other for use at workplace.

GREY HAIR COULD BE A SIGN OF GOOD HEALTH

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Thursday, July 26, 2012 0 comments

Stop getting annoyed by that patch of grey hair on your scalp, as a new study has found that it could be a sign of healthy body.

Spanish scientists, who studied wild boars, found that having grey hair and a rather grizzled look could actually be a sign that you have a long and healthy life ahead of you. Scientists said gray hair, which results from absence of melanin, seemed to be a mark of good health in wild boars. "As with human hair, wild boars show hair graying all across their fur," Galvan said. "But we found that boars showing hair graying were actually those in prime condition and with the lowest levels of oxidative damage," he said. Scientists, however, said that being a redhead could make one more susceptible to illness, an observation found in wild boar populations.

According to the report published in the current issue of the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology, wild boars with reddish coats have more cell damage than more mundanely coloured wild pigs. They say the reason is that the production of red pigment uses up an antioxidant that could otherwise destroy the free radicals that damage cells.

In humans, studies have found that red hair and red pigments, ormelanins, inskin are linked to higher rates of cancer.

"Given that all higher vertebrates, including humans, share the same types of melanins in skin, hair and plumage, these results increase our scant current knowledge on the physiological consequences of pigmentation," said lead researcher Ismael Galvan.

GLYCERIN FOR HAIR AND SKIN

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Sunday, May 6, 2012 0 comments

Glycerin is a natural emollient and has a cooling effect on skin. Being a humectant (which means that it attracts water, i.e. moisture), it draws oxygen into the skin thus helping it retain moisture. It can be used on hair too.
Although it can be applied topically on skin, putting it directly on to your hair will result in a gooey mess. Here's how you can make the best of it.

Curly hairWhile curly hair is beautiful to look at, it is in no way low-maintenance. If there is one word that fills every curly-haired girl with dread, it has to be frizz. Glycerin draws moisture from the air into the hair shaft. It works well as a conditioner since curly hair tends to get drier than other hair types because of the shape of the hair shaft.

Whip it up: Make a hydrating glycerin hair spray by mixing equal quantities of vegetable glycerin and water. Shake well. Add three drops of an essential oil and spray on after showering.

SkinGlycerin moisturises and helps skin cells mature. This does not mean it helps you age, rather it means healthy and mature cells are important for people with conditions like psoriasis. Glycerin accelerates the healing process, reduces bruising and promotes tissues and cells to repair themselves.

Whip it up: Mix one part glycerin, one part honey and two parts water or milk. Add oatmeal to get a thick texture and apply on the face. Rinse off after 20 minutes. A word of caution before you start overdosing on glycerin: in dry, non-humid climates, undiluted glycerin will pull out moisture from your skin and hair, resulting in blistered skin and a brittle mane. Dilute glycerin and use it along with jojoba oil in such conditions.

FACIALS ACCORDING TO YOUR SKIN TYPE

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Monday, April 2, 2012 0 comments

Before heading to the parlor for the all-important monthly beauty ritual, the facial, you need to know which kind suits your skin. We tell you more.
There's no denying that every woman loves a day at the salon. There's no better way to pamper yourself and get some much-needed relaxation than to book an appointment for a facial. A facial has benefits which are aesthetic as well as psychological. Not only does it improve the look of the skin, it also takes that back-breaking stress off your shoulders.
However, beauty expert Shahnaz Husain advises, "The skin type should be kept in mind while selecting a facial. The beauty therapist analyzes the skin and suggests the treatment that's suitable for a particular skin type - oily, dry or combination."
What's your type?
Normal to dry skin
For a woman with a normal skin type, a facial massage is provided by using nourishing creams. Moisturizers are also used. Husain suggests, "If you have normal or dry skin, ideally opt for the classic facial or a plant stem facial."
Classic facial: The classic salon facial includes cleansing, toning and massage (done manually or with the help of gadgets), mask and protection coverage. All the areas of the face and the neck are treated according to specific needs. This facial is done following a specific direction and movement of the fingers. Different strokes and pressures are applied to various areas.
Duration: 1 hour
Plant stem cell facial: This facial helps rejuvenate the skin and makes it look younger. The plant cells are introduced into the skin through external cosmetic care. They help the skin at the cellular level and activate the process of repair and replacement of dead and damaged skin cells. The facial stimulates the cellular regeneration process in the skin, reducing the signs of ageing. This facial comprises an exfoliator, cream, mask, serum and an under-eye gel.
Duration: 1 hour
Normal to oily skin
"For those with oily skin, a facial massage with creams or moisturizers is not advised," says Husain. The facial treatment for oily skin includes deep cleansing with exfoliation, toning, mask and protection. The masks and other procedures help remove excess oils, shrink the pores and make the skin soft and translucent.
Pearl facial: This facial is ideal for those with an oily skin. It helps remove tan and brightens the skin. Deep cleansing is done next, to refine the skin. This is followed by a light facial massage with pearl cream and application of a pearl mask. It helps retain moisture and revitalizes the skin. This facial ensures natural lightening of the skin, giving fair and radiant skin with an even color tone.
Duration: 1 hour

Silver facial: This facial is done to detoxify and purify your skin. The silver facial consists of a glow scrub, gel, cream and pack that offers dull skin an instant lift. This facial not only restores the natural pH balance of your skin, but also clears the pores and deep cleans to prevent the formation of blackheads. Dr Shobha Sehgal, beauty head, says, "The silver facial revives your skin by giving it the right amount of moisture, and evens out your tone, leaving your skin evidently supple and charming."
Duration: 40 minutes to 1 hour
Combination skin
Combination skin needs to be treated carefully, since the face has both dry and oily tissues. After cleansing, the dry area of the skin is massaged and the face is toned with a cold compress, using a rose-based skin tonic.
Platinum facial: The platinum facial is said to recharge and energize your skin. It influences the skin at the cellular level and helps to ensure the strength of its supportive tissues. It maintains the desired moisture level. It has powerful anti-oxidant effects which protect the skin's youthful properties and impart radiance.
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Gem therapy: Gemstone facial therapy utilizes the natural energy of gemstones and helps correct physical, mental and spiritual imbalances. This facial is based on the properties of different types of gems. These stones work as a detoxification and exfoliating aid and slow down the ageing process. The key ingredients contain ash from gems like emerald, ruby and sapphire. The facial restores the ideal skin balance, keeps the skin free from blemishes and helps in the process of cell renewal. The gemstone is ground to a micro-fine powder and applied using vitamin-rich oils and aromatherapy essences that relax the body, and improve skin tone and texture.
Duration: 1 hour
Benefits of a facial
- Professional cleansing, exfoliating and toning are part of a facial, and hence protect and preserve youthfulness.
- A facial delays the signs of ageing, fine lines and wrinkles and keeps the skin soft and supple.
- Both, the skin and muscles, are toned, which preserves firmness and elasticity.
- It induces relaxation and helps reduce stress and fatigue.
- Improves blood circulation, strengthens the supportive tissues and improves the skin's resilience.
- A facial also helps in lymphatic drainage, which flushes out toxins from your system and purifies the skin.
Keep in mind
- You can go for a facial every 4-6 weeks and clean-up every fortnight.
- Make sure your facial regime includes cleansing, exfoliation, black head removal, mask, steaming and moisturization.
- Ensure that the face and the neck area is massaged thoroughly. The massage should be gentle and not harsh.
- Skin specialist Dr Jaishree Sharad advises, "If your skin is dry, then ensure that a hydrating ingredient is a part of your facial mixture. For those with oily skin, make sure alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid is used which help to reduce excess oil flow. Those with sensitive skin should stay away from fragrance-based ingredients which can lead to eruptions."

TOMATO FOR CLEAR SKIN

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Saturday, March 17, 2012 0 comments

Tomato Plants
Tomato are a staple in every kitchen but hardly will you hear anyone extolling its cosmetic benefits. Whether you want to cure large pores or reduce acne and rashes or sooth a nasty sunburn or simply to revive the glow on dull skin, tomatoes are beneficial in many homemade beauty treatments.

Not only do tomatoes taste great but they also keep the skin healthy. It is necessary to consume tomatoes as they have lycopene, which is an antioxidant and hence works as a sunscreen from within. These antioxidants make tomato an anti-aging product as they help in fighting cellular damage and reddening of skin. It is recommended to have at least 16 milligrams of lycopene per day as they reduce the number of free radicals in the body and also help to retain the moisture in people who are used to sitting in air-conditioned environs. You don't need to spend your hard-earned money on expensive cosmetic treatments if you follow these simple steps to get healthy-looking skin:

Big pores? Shrink Them
Big pores provide easy access to dirt and grime thus increasing the chances of infecting the pore. Take a tablespoon of fresh tomato juice. Add two to four drops of fresh lime juice to this. Use a cotton ball to apply this mixture on your face. Massage it in circular motions. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and then wash off with cool water. Regular application will shrink pores greatly.

Acne healing
The acidity in tomatoes helps in reducing and clearing up your acne. Vitamin A and vitamin C are commonly found in a lot of acne medicines and tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. If you have mild acne, cut a tomato in half and apply the inside on your face. For severe acne mash a fresh tomato and use the pulp as a pack on the face. Leave it on for an hour. Rinse it off and moisturise. Do this on a regular basis or as many times as you can. Your acne is bound to dry off soon.

Astringent
If you have oily skin and struggle to keep your face from shining like a fried papad, tomato is the solution to your agony. Crush a fresh tomato and strain it. Make a little cucumber juice and add it to the tomato juice. Apply this juice with a cotton ball daily to control excessive oiliness and acne.

Good to eat, great to clean
A tomato and avocado mask works wonders on combination skin. This is because tomato works as an astringent as well as a blackhead and oil-reducing agent while avocados have an antiseptic and moisturising effect. A pack of mashed tomatoes and avocados help in soothing and cleansing combination skin (oily and dry), as they are rich in vitamin A, C and E. Apply this pack and wash off after 20 to 30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Burns no more
Summer is fast approaching and with harsh summer comes burnt, inflamed skin. A lot of people's skin gets sunburnt, raw and itchy due to exposure to the sun. Crush half a tomato and mix it with two tablespoons of plain yogurt. Apply this concoction on face, neck, hands and feet. Wash it off after 20 minutes. Tomato cools the skin and neutralises the surface while yogurt gives it a much needed protein boost while leaving it soft and supple.

Glowing skin
Mix honey with tomato juice until you get a thick paste. Apply this mixture and wash off after 15 minutes for smooth and glowing skin.

HOW TO HAVE A PEARLY WHITE TEETH

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Thursday, January 12, 2012 2 comments

Perfect pearly white teeth are anybody's dream. They brighten up even the most ordinary face.
Most of us are in awe of all the celebrities who have spotless teeth. But, as we all know, that comes with a price. These tips will help you sport a smile like a celebrity without causing a dent in your pocket.
1. Wine, tobacco, tea and coffee can stain you teeth. If you can't avoid them consume them in moderation. And brush your teeth, if possible, after every meal. This is the best way to prevent plaque and other tooth decay.
2. Gargle, gargle, gargle: What you first need is a good mouthwash for your dental hygiene. But don't overuse mouthwash, warn dentists. What they suggest is to use mouthwash not more than two times a month. And the reason? The mouthwash kills some good bacteria in your mouth, too. So always use it in moderation.
3. What matters is the kind of toothpaste you use. Get toothpaste with whitening agents to remove all the stains that you accumulate on a daily basis owing to an overdose of caffeine.
4. Flossing is something you should be doing. But only if there is too many gaps between your tooth and food particles often get trapped in them resulting in bad breath.
5. Always visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and check-up.
6. A balanced diet is the best way to prevent gum decay and tooth diseases. Include a lot of raw vegetables, yoghurt and fruits like apples in your diet.
7. Salt is a natural teeth whitener. You can add a pinch of salt with your toothpaste every time you brush.

Shahnaz Husain, tells you how to get a glowing complexion

Right there, on your kitchen shelf, are many ingredients that can easily be used to add radiance to your skin.

Tone your skin daily with rose water. It is helpful for all skin types. Toning stimulates blood circulation to the skin surface and adds a glow. For a skin toner, take rose water and mix it with witch hazel. For dry skin, mix 3 parts of rose water with one part of witch hazel. For oily and combination skin, mix rose water and witch hazel in equal quantities. Witch hazel will be available at your local pharmacy. If you cannot get witch hazel, use plain rose water, or buy a rose-based skin tonic. Keep the toner in a bowl in the fridge and soak cotton wool pads in it. First use them to wipe the skin. Then, stroke the skin with them. On the cheeks, use outward and upward movements, ending each stroke at the temples and applying gentle pressure. On the forehead, start from the centre and go outwards on each side, again ending at the temples. For the chin, use circular movements. Then, pat the skin briskly with the rosewater-soaked cotton wool pads.

Use a facial scrub twice a week. It can work wonders on the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells and making the skin brighter. It also improves skin texture and produces an even colour tone. It is a powerful cleansing procedure too, leaving the skin renewed, refreshed and glowing. For a scrub, mix ground almonds (badaam) with yogurt. Dried and powdered lemon and orange peels can also be added. Dry and powdered mint (pudina) leaves also help to add a glow. Apply the mixture on the face and leave on for a few minutes. Then, rub gently, with small circular movements, washing off with water. A facial scrub can also be made with walnut powder. Add honey and lemon juice.

Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply daily on the face. Wash it off after 20 minutes. It leaves the skin very soft and glowing. Egg white can also be added to this mixture.

Fruit packs are great for adding radiance to the skin. They can also be applied daily. Mix grated apples with ripe papaya pulp and mashed banana. Yogurt or lemon juice can be added to the mixture. Apply it on the face and leave it on for half an hour. Wash off with plain water. It not only adds a glow, but also removes tan and makes the skin soft.

Dried and powdered curry leaves (kari patta) can also be added to face packs, as it is said to add a glow to the skin. It can be mixed with Fullers Earth (multani mitti) and rose water into a paste. Apply on the face and wash it off when it is dry. Multani mitti also clarifies the skin and is particularly useful for oily skin.

The skin is called the mirror of the body and rightly so. No other organ reflects the state of internal health as faithfully as the skin. An unhealthy lifestyle, lack of sleep and exercise, stress, nutritional deficiencies all reflect on the skin, in terms of dull lifeless skin. Include a variety of natural foods, like fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts, yogurt, fresh fruit juices, leafy green vegetables, "dalia", oats, green tea, in your diet. Fresh fruit juices should be diluted with water. Drink plenty of water. Foods like these remove toxins and cleanse the system, adding a glow to the skin. Indeed, internal health and external beauty are two sides of the same coin.

HAIR & SKIN CARE

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Monday, December 5, 2011 0 comments

Cosmetologist Dr Rekha Sheth shares her tips for healthy hair and skin.

- Remember that the most important factors that decide the quality of your skin and hair are your genes and family history, your nerves and emotions, and your immune system.
- Use an appropriate face wash meant for your skin type and wash twice a day.
- Use cleansers at night to remove make up and dirt before using a face wash.
- Use sunscreen everyday even if you are indoors - the sun's UVA rays come through windows too and contribute to aging, pigmenting and tanning. Ideally, sunscreen should be applied every three hours.
- Sunscreen should have an SPF of 30 or more. SPF is the degree of protection against UVB rays, hence sunscreen must have UVA protection as well. The usual UVA protection ingredients are Avobenzone, Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxide, Mexoryl and Tinosorb.
- Make up products like foundations, mineral powders and compacts do not have adequate sun protection.
- Indian skin tends to tan and pigment easily and patchily. There is a very thin line between tanning and pigmentation. If your tan hasn't gone in 4-6 weeks, see a dermatologist.
- It is advisable to use mild skin lightening creams as prevention. Look for botanical ingredients like Arbutin, Bearberry, Licorice, Mulberry, Ginseng, Gingko, Emblica, Turmeric - curcuma, Grapeseed and vitamins like C and A, and Niacinamide.
- Aging can be intrinsic, i.e. genetic, and can be delayed by exercise and, to a lesser extent, through diet. Extrinsic factors include increased UV intensity, increased pollution as well as stress. All these factors tend to dry the skin and make it more prone to pigmentation and aging. Hence it is important to start caring for your skin in your teens.
- Extrinsic factors produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which are naughty oxygen molecules that damage the cells and make them age faster. Anti-oxidants neutralise these ROS.
- At night, use a moisturiser with an age-protecting agent.
- For younger skin, look for ingredients with antioxidants like vitamins C, E or a whole range of botanicals like green tea, grapeseed or pomegranate extract, curcumin, etc. You might also like to look out for the following: Genistein, ECGC, Resveratrol, Idebenone and Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10.
- Kitchen ingredients like fruits do not work.
- For older skin, look for the following ingredients: peptides, vitamin A and derivatives like retinol and other retinoids, Alpha, beta and polyhydroxy acids.
- Exfoliation should be done with extreme caution and only with modern bead exfoliators. Avoid granular scrubs as these tend to damage the skin microscopically, which can lead to slow, insidious and patchy darkening.
- It is advisable to visit a dermatologist at least once a year. There are a lot of nuances in skin colour, texture, smoothness, etc. that we can't see for ourselves. These can be detected by the dermatologist and mild creams/treatments can be recommended.
- Always use a conditioner after you shampoo your hair. It protects your hair and is a better option than oil. Conditioners neutralise electrical charge in the hair shaft and help in detangling. Conditioners also improve shine and to some extent repair minor frays in the hair shaft.Conditioning agents like hydrolized protein or silicons are added to increase manageability and shine in the hair.

BEST PRACTICES FOR ACNE PREVENTION

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Sunday, November 20, 2011 1 comments

Acne is a skin condition that causes skin inflammation that manifests as pimples or skin rash.
A common reason behind this affliction is the formation of clogged pores that lead to irritations, which multiply either in the presence of hostile environment or hormonal imbalances. While acne is most common among teenagers, it can be a source of frustration for many adults as well. But how can one control this affliction? Here are some best practices for acne prevention and control that may help you move beyond this adolescent-adult problem.

Prevention and control - Unfortunately, because there is no cure for acne, prevention and control is the only way forward. If you've tried everything from skin ointments to blood tests, you can beat the acne with a good skin care routine that incorporates three basic steps. Clean, treat and protect.

Cleansing - The first step is as simple as gently cleansing your skin on a regular basis, also using a good cleansing product to gently wash away dead skin cells and impurities. If your cleanser contains proven acne fighters like benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid it is an added benefit. Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising. However, avoid scrubbing or repeated skin washing. Rubbing, whether with a towel or your hands, will only aggravate the problem.

Treating - It is imperative to treat the skin with something that minimizes bacteria (like benzoyl peroxide) or slows down the shedding of skin cells (like salicylic acid). Avoid greasy cosmetics or creams. Take off make-up at night, and when buying anything that touches your skin - look for water-based formulas.

Protecting - Try not to squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the pimples. Although it might be tempting to do this, it can lead to skin infections and scarring. Avoid wearing tight headbands, baseball caps, and other hats. Shampoo your hair daily, especially if it is oily. Comb or pull your hair back to keep the hair out of your face.

Be aware of how your food intake affects the acne: A lot of well-wishers will have you believe that what you eat is causing the acne. While this might have some foundation in reality - deep fried foods cooked in low quality oil has been known to affect skin texture - it isn't the sole reason behind acne. Identify which foods irritate your skin or digestion into resulting in acne growths and avoid them. Despite the popular belief that chocolate, nuts, and greasy foods cause acne, research does not confirm this idea. Diets high in refined sugars may be related to acne, though.

Medication and home remedies - Several home remedies have found their way into acne prevention and control, without much foundation in science and belief. If you find that your acne is a result of topical skin issues like clogged pores, try home remedies that solve the specific problems of poor skin texture. Therefore, if oily skin is causing skin formations, rely on homemade skin packs like Fullers Earth to reduce the greasiness. If dry skin is causing breakouts, then rely on milk-based, drying face packs that relieve your skin with moisture.

Your skin is an extension of your physical and mental health: Many times it just boils down to what you are experiencing physically and mentally. Stress and hormonal imbalances are the leading causes behind acne that refuses to go away with the early 20s. If topical treatments, skin texture solutions and homemade packs don't solve the problem, then make an appointment with your physician. Remember - if you can't solve it with an ointment or a dietary and exercise routine, then there's more to it and there's always an expert who can help diagnose the situation.

STRESS TURNS HAIR GREY

Posted by Elizebath Bijoy Tuesday, August 30, 2011 0 comments

London: Stress can turn your hair grey, say scientists. They have found how stress hormone adrenaline causes damage that could lead to a variety of conditions - such as grey hair or the more serious cancer, the Daily Mail reported.

The research is still at an early stage but it could one day lead to drugs that help counter some of the medical problems caused by one always being under pressure, it said.

The new hope comes from US researchers who worked out how adrenaline wreaks havoc on the body.

During brief but intense periods of stress, adrenaline is beneficial as it prepares the body to fight or flee.

But when the stress goes on and on, it can start to take its toll on the DNA at the very core of our being, researchers said.

To work out why, the researchers infused mice with adrenaline over several weeks to mimic the effects of being under long-term stress.

Levels of a key anti-cancer protein called p53 fell. This protein, sometimes nicknamed 'the guardian of the genome', usually springs into action when DNA is damaged, allowing potentially cancerous cells to carry out repairs.

DNA damage is also thought to impact on the cells that go on to produce the pigment in hair.

'This could give us a plausible explanation of how chronic stress may lead to a variety of human conditions and disorders, which range from merely cosmetic, like greying hair, to life-threatening disorders like malignancies,' the Mail quoted lead researcher professor Robert Lefkowitz of Duke University, North Carolina, as saying.

SKIN CARE TIPS CHEAPER THAN SPA

What’s cheaper than a spa, tastes good, doesn’t smell too bad and can rejuvenate your skin in less than 10 minutes? Fruits are natural and effective skin restoratives. The best thing you could ever do to keep looking good, is to understand the healing properties of fruits.
Most fruits are low in calories, sweet, and a good source of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Used as a face pack or mask, they hydrate your skin, smooth away wrinkles, lighten it, and even heal various skin conditions.
  • Banana mask:

Bananas have lots of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine, and vitamins A, B, E, and F. Their anti-aging powers make them a great skin restorative for anyone over 35. If you make this banana mask at home, you could store it in the refrigerator for about 5 days and use it at least twice in a week.
Mash a banana and add to it milk or cream, honey, and oat flour. Apply it to your face, arms, and neck, and rinse it off after ten minutes (longer, if you can stand the smell). If you have oily skin, add a few drops of lemon juice to the banana and milk mixture.
  • Mixed fruit pack I:

The enzyme papain in papayas is a natural exfoliator and is especially good for those with damaged skin. Papaya juice can also lighten freckles and brown spots, and soften the skin.
Don’t throw away the peel; it has antibacterial and wound healing abilities. Cucumbers act as a toner and strawberries condition and tone the skin.
Blend strawberries, cucumber or papaya with a little yogurt and clay. Apply it to your face and leave it on for a while. This face mask moisturizes the skin, lightens it, and removes dead skin.
  • Mixed fruit pack II:

The fruits in this pack are excellent for hydrating tanned and dry skin. It’ll also nourish and protect the delicate skin around the eyes. You could also add clay to the pack since it absorbs oil from oily skin.
Apply a thin film of honey on your face and then apply a mixture of strawberries, pear, grapes, apples and oranges. Wash it off with warm water after 10-15 minutes.
  • Apricot mask:

Apricots are best for extremely dry skin. The Vitamin A in the fruit rejuvenates the skin instantly, it smooths wrinkles and tightens the skin.
The oils in the fruit and especially in the kernel, are utilized by the skin to make enriched sebum that protects your skin.
Take two apricots and some yogurt; blend them and apply it to your face. Wash it off after 10 minutes.
Add a tablespoon of honey to apricot pulp for an invigorating mask that clears the skin and moisturizes.
  • Orange and yogurt mask:

Oranges aren’t just for eating. The Vitamin C in them also works wonders when applied to the skin. Sunburned or extremely dry skin will benefit from this face mask.
Take orange pulp, or the rind and blend it with some yogurt. Apply it to the face and massage it in. Wash it off after 10 minutes with lukewarm water.
