Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy and fit. People who are active in their day to day lives are more likely to feel better and live longer. Combining regular excercise with a healthy eating plan can improve your energy levels and overall health.
  • 1. See your doctor before you start any exercise programme. Get a full physical to make sure everything's in working order, then find a personal trainer and make an appointment with him or her for a consultation. Most trainers will help you figure out what your fitness level is, your body fat and circumference measurements, and the right way to start a programme.
  • 2. Most adults need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days per week…BUT Start Slowly! Many beginners make the mistake of doing too much when they first start out. If you haven't worked out in a while (or ever) start with a walking programme of about 20 to 30 minutes, 3 days a week. Each session, add a few minutes to your workout to progress each week.
  • 3. Schedule your workouts each week, just like you would a doctor's appointment.
  • 4. Every day, ask yourself how you will make your life healthier. It can be as simple as drinking more water or parking farther away from the front door.
  • 5. Reward yourself! Give yourself a massage when you reach your goals, or maybe some new workout clothes.
  • 6. Set daily or weekly goals. Long term goals are great, but are so far away we often forget why we're working so hard. To stay motivated, write down a daily or weekly goal and then follow number 5 (rewarding yourself) if you reach it.
  • 7. Surround yourself with supportive people. Decide what kind of support you need. Do you want them to remind you to exercise? Ask about your progress? Participate with you regularly or occasionally? Allow you time to exercise by yourself? Go with you to a special event, such as a 5K or 10K walk/run? Be understanding when you get up early to exercise? Spend time with the children while you exercise? Try not to ask you to change your exercise routine? Share your activity time with others. Make a date with a family member, friend or co-worker. Be an active role model for your children.
  • 8. Prepare for your workout the night before by packing your gym bag or, if you work out at home, laying out your workout clothes so when you get home, you're ready to go.
  • 9. Eat regularly throughout the day so you don't tire yourself during your workout
  • 10. Wear comfortable, properly fitted footwear and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing appropriate for the weather and the activity.
  • 11. Find a convenient time and place to do activities. Try to make it a habit, but be flexible. If you miss an exercise opportunity, work the activity into your day another way.
  • 12. Rather than thinking of exercise and activity as a chore, find new and exciting activities you really enjoy doing. There are so many new activities popping up all the time that there is no reason why you can`t find one you enjoy. Think outside the square; exercise doesn`t have to be limited to running on the treadmill or riding a bike.
  • 13. Use music to keep you entertained. Research has shown that listening to music while exercising allows you to workout 25 percent longer. Fill your ipod up with your favourite up-tempo tracks that will keep you working hard.
  • 14. Make a conscious effort to add incidental exercise to everyday activities. Park further away from the shops so you can walk that bit extra.
